Grocery shopping is an important daily activity among Australian consumers. Nowadays, most supermarkets can deliver groceries right into shoppers’ kitchens. However, as shopping habits have shifted and on-demand delivery becomes more available, more and more consumers are ordering groceries online as they continue to discover its advantages. In fact, according to Spryker, “almost two-thirds of Australian consumers order groceries online, with 10% doing most or all of their food shopping via the internet” GLOBE NEWSWIRE

According to a survey conducted by SmartSpotter, almost 20% of shoppers purchase groceries online regularly. 87% order weekly, while 11% do it every two weeks, and less than 1% do it once a month.

The covid-19 pandemic has changed the way we shop locally; the "Shop Local" trend is one that clearly has helped multiple small businesses to succeed amid the global economic recovery. Here’s how to adapt this trend…

TAS is the state where most people prefer to do online grocery shopping, followed by NT. On the other hand, Western Australia is a state where fewer people do online grocery shopping.

Most consumers (over 60%) place their orders on weekdays or weekends with no particular preference between one or the other. In comparison, 29% of shoppers prefer doing so on weekdays, and the remaining 10% place their grocery orders during the weekend.

Our survey also showed that, when shopping online, consumers behave differently than when doing it in person, as they tend to shop less impulsively and more items outside their lists, taking the opportunity to buy heavy items in more significant bulk.

The findings presented in this report are based on the results of an investigative task submitted by hundreds of our Spotters all over Australia during the months of October, November and December od 2022.
